Our Paver Installation Process

A quality paver installation depends on meticulous base preparation, which is why our process begins well below the surface. We excavate the area to the appropriate depth, typically eight to twelve inches for driveways and six to eight inches for patios and walkways. A geotextile fabric is laid to prevent soil migration, followed by layers of compacted crushed aggregate base material. Each layer is compacted with a plate compactor to create a rock-solid foundation that prevents settling and shifting. A screed layer of bedding sand is then leveled precisely before the pavers are set in the chosen pattern. Edge restraints are installed around the perimeter, and polymeric sand is swept into the joints and activated with water. The completed surface is compacted a final time to lock everything together.

1. Site evaluation and layout: we confirm grades, drainage fall away from the structure, and utility locations, then chalk the finished layout so you can see it before excavation
2. Excavation: we remove soil to the depth the application requires, allowing for base, bedding sand, and the paver thickness
3. Base installation and compaction: Class II aggregate base goes down in lifts and each lift is plate compacted rather than compacted once at full depth
4. Bedding sand screed: one inch of washed concrete sand is screeded to a uniform depth and is never used to correct an uneven base
5. Paver laying and cutting: units are laid to the chosen pattern from a straight control line, with perimeter and penetration cuts made on a wet saw
6. Edge restraint: a spiked polymer or concrete edge locks the perimeter so the field cannot creep, which is the most common failure point on a cheap installation
7. Joint sand and final compaction: polymeric sand is swept into the joints, the field is compacted with a protective pad, and the sand is activated so joints resist weeds and washout

Base Preparation for San Diego Soils

San Diego County has some of the most challenging soils in California for hardscape construction, including expansive clays that swell significantly when wet and shrink when dry. This soil movement is the primary reason poured concrete cracks so frequently in our area. Quality Pools and Pavers addresses this challenge with engineered base systems that isolate the paver surface from soil movement. We use specific aggregate gradations and compaction specifications based on the soil conditions at your property. In areas with heavy clay, we increase base depth and may incorporate additional drainage solutions. This attention to subsurface preparation is what separates professional paver installations that last decades from amateur work that settles, shifts, and becomes uneven within a few years.
